Meet Coach Damien Skelling

Back in 1965 I was introduced to the sport of bowling and began bowling in my first league that September. This began the journey where I fell in love with the sport and have made lots of friends over the years.

There are so many great memories I have had over the years, but one of my best moments was achieving my first 700 series with a 779. I keep coming back as I truly enjoy the game and still want to continue to improve.

In 1992 I decided that I wanted to give back more to the sport, and this is when I started coaching. Over the last 20 years, I have been a facilitator with the coaching program. Completing all coaching levels in addition to being involved in the new coaching development program. It brings me great joy to support bowlers that want to coach and are passionate about learning and growing with the sport.

I’m proud to say I was a coach with the Canadian National Team from 2006 to 2015 (9 years). Managing the adult team for 5 years and coaching for the youth team for 4 years. I had the pleasure of traveling to many international events with the teams, learned a lot, and met some amazing people.

My goal over the next bowling season is to help the kids I’m working with win a medal at provincials.

Meet Coach Stephen Wong

I have been coaching 10-pin bowling since the early 1990’s. Always associated with a youth program at various bowling centers over the years. Starting at Tolworth, United Kingdom, then Sudbury, Ontario, and Calgary, Alberta. The question that interests me the most is — how do one bowls at one’s best, both physically and mentally. If you would like to learn more about bowling, let’s figure out these bowling mysteries together.

Meet Coach Liz Wong

I started bowling in London, England in 1989. I fell in love with the sport almost immediately and took many bowling courses as well as coaching courses. I began bowling in many leagues and tournaments around the United Kingdom as I could. Started coaching youth leagues since 1990 in England.
In 1994, we moved back to Northern Ontario, Canada. I competed in Northern Ontario for four years and represented the province in many tournaments. I also coached their youth league at Holiday Lanes in Sudbury. In 1997, we moved back to Calgary and continue my love of bowling and coaching. Without stopping in learning, I have been taking coaching lessons from other people that
will also improve my own coaching towards others.

I have been competing in many years of Team Trials. Won in the Senior Division in 2011; came 4th in 2015 and made the Senior Teams in both years. In 2011 at PABCON Tournament, we came 3rd on the Trio Event. Also competing in the Tournament of Americas for Canada from 1998-2019 and won numerous medals in different divisions. As someone who is positive and personable, I pride myself on being a role model for others to turn to on and off the lanes. Meet Coach Vinh Luu

I have been a member of the Calgary Chinese league since the age of 20, it has been a fantastic community and a great space to grow as a bowler. During my time in this league, I have bowled my first sanctioned 300 as well as being a champion of several Chinese tournaments over the years.
In 2019 made the switch to two-handed bowling due to an injury and never turned back. This newer technique is making great strides in the bowling world and I have become very passionate about teaching others the technique. It truly gives all athletes another opportunity to use a style that will work best for them.
Coaching is one of my passions and that aligns with my profession as a phys ed teacher. I’ve had the pleasure of coaching children across a variety of sports disciplines, helping them grow both athletically and personally.
I’m excited to be able to transfer this knowledge to the next generation of bowlers.
Outside of bowling, I can be found on the golf course, and spending time with my daughter who is the joy of my life.
My goal over the next bowling season is to level up the skill of each of the kids I work with and share my love of the sport with them. It truly brings me great joy to see these kids grow and love the sport as much as I do.

Fun Fact: If you ever need a good dad joke, Vinh knows them all 😁
